🧮 How to Calculate the Right Amount of Mulch and Soil

Take the guesswork out of your next project.

Whether you’re topping up garden beds, laying new turf, or starting fresh with raised planters, knowing how much mulch or soil to order can save time, money, and effort. At ID Garden & Landscape Centre, we help Eltham locals and landscapers get it right the first time.

 

📏 Step 1: Measure Your Space

·      You’ll need the length (L), width (W), and depth (D) of the area you want to cover. Make sure all measurements are in metres (m).

·      Example: Garden bed = 4m long × 2m wide × 0.1m deep (10cm)

 

📐 Step 2: Use the Volume Formula

To calculate volume in cubic metres (m³): L × W × D = Volume

Example:
 4m × 2m × 0.1m = 0.8m³

That’s the amount of mulch or soil you’ll need to fill the bed to a 10cm depth.

📌 Depth Recommendations:

·      Mulch: 75mm (0.075m) for weed suppression & moisture retention

·      Soil (garden beds): 300mm (0.3m) for veggie or flower beds or 150mm for ornamentals and Australian native plants.

·      Soil (turf underlay): 100–150mm (0.1–0.15m)

 

🛠 Tip: Round Up!

Always round up slightly to account for compaction, settling, or irregular shapes. It’s better to have a little extra than come up short mid-project.
